What do I want to change about my style?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
I have all cake and no frosting. I can do SMART to death, I want to add some SEXY and some FUN. Obviously in differing amounts based on what I am doing at the time. If I am filming a teaching segment, I need to tone down the sexy, but I don't know that I want it to disappear completely. I am a romance writer, I have a reputation to maintain! I'd like date night to not look like I'm on my way to a business meeting. I'd like to wear my dresses more with out looking like I am going to a funeral.

What do I like, love even, about my current style?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
I like that it is easy and low maintenance. I like that the pieces all work together and are interchangeable. I have lots of quality pieces and everything fits well. This surprised me because when I started this evaluation I didn't think I liked anything about my style but it really does fit my lifestyle. Most of the pieces I have are in colors I like too.

What are the most worn items in my closet and why?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Men's oversized denim shirt -Comfort, it is so soft I have been known to sleep in it.
Black Crepe Eileen Fisher Trousers- Comfort, Pockets, they look neat with no effort
Long skirts -wearable with flats (probably not a great look!) I don't need to shave my legs, yeah, utter laziness.
Vneck T shirts -comfort, look good
Cardigans -I have a bunch in cashmere and alpaca but none with the little pearly buttons down the front
Crepe knit Eileen Fisher twin sets -fast easy comfort, pulled together without...

Favorite fashion era?

Not really. I like such an eclectic selection that I could find something I love and hate in all of them.

What motivates me to shop?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Panic? Mostly I shop to get ideas of things I would like to make. I don't buy very often but I tend to be streaky so I am just coming off a 'big' buying spree. I bought a couple of merino sweaters at Costco, a GAP tipped ponte blazer, a saddle colored mini messenger at GAP, some ponte skirts at Costco, a dress at BR, a leopard print top, and skinny jeans at Old Navy and a couple of scarves too. I've just lost @40 lbs so some of my winter stuff from last year didn't fit. I ended up getting new...

What accessories do I wear most often?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
I have tons of accessories and this is usually where I add color and funk to my outfits. Scarves, bags, shoes are where I have fun. My scarves I wear wrapped around my neck usually and may wear more than one playing the patterns off each other (leopard and stripes). Bags are usually in color, orange, pool liner blue, shamrock green, cardinal red -got' em all. Totes, school boy, doctor, backpack, crossbody, you name it. I have a wardrobe of Coach, mostly in neutrals. Shoes I've already covered...

What style shoes do I wear?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Okay, this is where the wheels come off. My clothing style is pretty basic, even boring but I love funky shoes. Fluevog -loved since the mid 80's own a couple pairs including a pale olive green and a black sandal that I had the shoemaker (I have a very close relationship with my shoemaker!) customize so they are literally one of a kind. I adore Miz Mooz too. I have very funky Izod sneakers that mimic biking sneakers, biker boots, paddock boots, Chelsea boots. I have a weakness for Red shoes a...

Do I (really) wear dresses? What styles?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
I have bunches, mostly black, but I don't wear them much. I am very unbalanced. Imagine a stack of quarters, push the top few to the left and the bottom few to the right. That would be my torso if I were facing left. I am big busted with a big round rump and I don't hate either of them but finding a single garment that can cover both with ease is difficult, not impossible but tough. I just bought a surplice tree bark print B&W dress from Banana Republic that works because it is stretchy was a...

What are my favorite patterns?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Stripes -Horizontal and Vertical
Polka Dots
Really, I prefer textures so much of my wardrobe is solids and pattern only gets added in the accessories.

What styles look horrendous on me? How do they fight my body?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Straight waist bands -There is at least a 3" difference between my back and front waist.
Capri/Cropped pants -my legs are really short to begin with.
Chest pockets/ Camp shirts -Chest is too full.
Halters -not enough support.

What styles do I wish I could wear?

Halter dresses- No support.
Cocktail/ evening dresses- no need, I live in Madison where getting dressed up means pulling out the good fleece!

What garment styles do I love to wear?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Cardigans/ jackets- anything to cut up the bulk of my torso.
Pencil skirts- despite being plus-sizeish I have narrow hips and legs.
Any bottom with pockets- I have to recut Eileen Fisher pants anyway, the wider ones I add pockets to also.
Silky Cotton Men's shirts- with the collar popped and the sleeves rolled. I like my very obviously female body with the masculine edge.

What are my Go To outfits?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Eileen Fisher Black Crepe Modern Wide leg pants (I added pockets to them, LOVE!)
V or Scoop neck T-shirt long or short sleeve (depending on the temp)
Sweater (Usually a V-neck flat knit or a 'waterfall' type cardigan
Croc ballet flats or dansko clogs
some kind of scarf to give it some texture

I could live in this. I have several different pairs of EF pants in different widths and colors.
T-shirts could be silk jersey or linen jersey but are usually GAP cotton

What clothing brands do I hate? Why?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, In : Style Exploration
I don't really hate any of it, which either makes me very open or a totally superficial fashionista! Versace always struck me as ridiculous. Some D&G does too but other things of theirs I love.

What clothing brands do I love? and Why?

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Gap, Eileen Fisher, J. Crew -Simple lines, good fabrics
Zoran, Uniform dressing, kit of parts approach, luxe fabrics
Alabama Chanin- rich detail, -t shirt feel but OTT decoration

So much of what I like is determined by tactile feel. I love the way a beaded dress hangs on a body, actually carrying the weight of it. There is a sensualness to cashmere and alpaca that soothes me even beyond just the warmth. Even in my writing I end up describing how a character feels in their clothes whether it is a...

Adjectives to describe my style

Posted by Lisette Carrithers on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, In : Style Exploration
Boring (being honest here)
Simple
Monotone
Serious
Loose
Random
Soft
Shapeless
Scattered
Dark

This is a little on the harsh side but despite doing this over a month ago I still feel these work. I like to think I would be avant garde but the truth is I could probably be described as preppy eclectic. That is a preppy base that has aspects of (Minimalism, Japanese, Baroque, Punk...) I was asked to describe myself as a color at one point and I said silver because I tend to reflect back what people want to ...
